Face it: most of us spend a lot of time in a car every week, from commuting to carpooling to driving the kids EVERYWHERE. Winter driving changes the game, so please pay attention to your driving posture - because it gets worse in the cold.

Why? Because unless you have the fancy “start up and warm up your car” button, you’re likely getting in a cold car and you’re automatically hunching up your shoulders.

I’m a big fan of hats, but I know …. If you’re having a good hair day, the last thing you want to do is squish your hair under your hat. Might I suggest a hood instead? A hood keeps your head and your neck warm.

Your #1 solution to the hunched shoulders / cold neck problem is a scarf . Get one that you love and wear it every time you’re outside!

Now that your neck is staying warm, please think about your driving posture. Bad road conditions already crank up our stress levels.   I’m not suggesting that you do the one-finger driving posture, but whenever possible, keep your grip light and your shoulders down. It’s pretty easy to be in “Mario mode” but consciously keep your shoulders relaxed and your grip soft.

Lastly, my FAVORITE anti-shoulder-winter-tension strategy is to use a microwaveable neck wrap when you get to your destination. You can buy these anywhere - or ask for one as a holiday gift. The heat and weight of it on your shoulders will drop tension and soften and release your shoulder and neck muscles.

Questions or comments? Let me know! Stay warm....
